With a low season ahead of us in terms of holidays, TiVo is making a run at marketing its product as a Valentine’s day gift. I’m not sure how successful this will turn out since their main attraction to call this a romantic gift is including a second remote that looks a little more fancy pants. An extra remote seems like it would cause more problems than anything else. I can envision my wife and I sitting on the couch changing the channels on each other with our rival remotes. I like TiVo’s thought though, anything to continue to differentiate from generic DVR.

On another note, I received my e-newsletter and they were promoting using your TiVO for valentine’s day:

“From getting all the romantic movies you can take to playing love songs for your sweetie [through TiVo’s connection to internet radio] to sweet ideas on seducing your friends, lovers, and family to one red-hot offer that includes an additional remote, ’tis the season to fall in love all over again with the amazing TiVo service”

TiVo really is a service as they suggest movies or show to pre-record for that night as well as setting up the surround sound speakers with the free TiVo radio connection. I don’t think this would fly for my Valentine’s day, but it’s a good alternative if you have children at home and are spending the night at home. Besides, my TiVo is already full of sports, 24, Family Guy, Simpsons, The Office,…….my wife doesn’t have much input into the season passes.

By for now, Adam Toz

I’m beginning this blog to spread the good word on a wonderful, but misunderstood product. TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) is a superior product over generic DVRs provided by a cable company, but their additional features and ease of use are not promoted properly. I was disturbed by a recent article that states that the Yankee Group is predicting TiVo will be extinct by 2010. The world needs to be made aware of this product’s capabilities. TiVo is continually upgrading their features and capabilities to stay ahead of their competitors, but their long term success is still in question.

The proper marketing of this product is through word of mouth and demonstrations by properly train individuals. I don’t know if this means adding small stands inside malls next to the overstuffed novelty slippers and the sports memorabilia framed pictures. Maybe I’m biased towards these mall stands since I own

Boston
College slippers and Vinitieri’s Snow Bowl kick from them. Either way, TiVo users need to begin spreading their joy of TiVo to all that will listen.

TiVo and cable DVR’s do have many similar features. A few features exclusively offered by TiVo that are not promoted heavily and I did not learn about until after I set up my system:

- Ability to download programming to your computer off of the TiVo

- Burn DVD’s of these shows or transfer to a video iPod

- Program shows to your TiVo remotely through Yahoo’s TV section

I don’t want to lose these features which would force me to convert to the generic DVR offered by Comcast. Luckily TiVo and Comcast recently signed an agreement to offer TiVo through the cable company. More to come of this later.
