I’m beginning this blog to spread the good word on a wonderful, but misunderstood product. TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) is a superior product over generic DVRs provided by a cable company, but their additional features and ease of use are not promoted properly. I was disturbed by a recent article that states that the Yankee Group is predicting TiVo will be extinct by 2010. The world needs to be made aware of this product’s capabilities. TiVo is continually upgrading their features and capabilities to stay ahead of their competitors, but their long term success is still in question.
The proper marketing of this product is through word of mouth and demonstrations by properly train individuals. I don’t know if this means adding small stands inside malls next to the overstuffed novelty slippers and the sports memorabilia framed pictures. Maybe I’m biased towards these mall stands since I own
Boston
College slippers and Vinitieri’s Snow Bowl kick from them. Either way, TiVo users need to begin spreading their joy of TiVo to all that will listen.
TiVo and cable DVR’s do have many similar features. A few features exclusively offered by TiVo that are not promoted heavily and I did not learn about until after I set up my system:
- Ability to download programming to your computer off of the TiVo
- Burn DVD’s of these shows or transfer to a video iPod
- Program shows to your TiVo remotely through Yahoo’s TV section
I don’t want to lose these features which would force me to convert to the generic DVR offered by Comcast. Luckily TiVo and Comcast recently signed an agreement to offer TiVo through the cable company. More to come of this later.

Hey Adam,
Good to see someone using uniblogs… I was beginning to think that all the students would use blogger, which wouldn’t leave much scope to discuss the difference between blogging platforms.

Adam,
I am also a big TIVO fan. Given my busy schedule, I’m not able to watch TV when a show originally airs - but my TIVO is there for me. I watch the show on my own schedule in about 45 minutes because I blow thru the commercials. The one feature I would like to see is a button that automatically fastforwards thru the commercial and stops when the show comes back on. Now that would be a good feature!

I don’t own TiVo and use DVR either. I am lazy at recording and have never recorded anything, not even on my old VCR. Many times, it has crossed my mind to use DVR (cable TV) to record Patriot’s matches then I also said to myself what’s the point in recoding the match when I knew the end result. There is no excitement….

Adam, I am right with regarding TiVo. I have never owned nothing else than a TiVo so I am biased but I hope they never go bust. Everytime I visit a friend that has a DVR it never has the extra features that a TiVo does

I have not used Tivo nor a DVR recorder but find it to be a nice feature either way for people who are always on the go.
